Executive Summary

The Smart Cities Innovation Challenge (SCIC) is a programme designed by AFRITEX to find and illuminate innovative technologies in ICT that address the issues of urbanization, potentially transforming Nigeria’s urban socio-economies and propelling the Nigeria Smart City Initiative (NSCI).

The United Nations World Cities Report published in May 2016 noted a global trend in which cities have become central to the transformation of the global economy, as urbanization has radically altered man’s energy consumption patterns, water and sanitation needs, food security and mobility of human beings. Subsequently, governments are ill-equipped to tackle these unprecedented challenges arising from urban development.

This challenge is to support ICT “techpreneurs” with ideas and skills to alleviate the urban socio-economic contradictions, and make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable for a better improved living of Nigerian and African citizens.

Who Should Apply

SCIC is open to strongly motivated teams in R&D institutes, ICT start-ups, tech developers, Fintechs and students from around Nigeria, with smart cities solutions.
